The sidereal zodiac: a map of the sky anchored in the stars
Jyotish measures the positions of the grahas (planetary influences) against the backdrop of the stars. This is why your sidereal sign may differ from the Western Sun sign you already know.

Clear understanding, without fear
We can read the same sky using two different coordinate systems.
The tropical zodiac places the beginning of Aries at the spring equinox. It is connected to the rhythm of the seasons. The sidereal zodiac, by contrast, places its starting point in relation to the stars. Because the Earth's axis shifts very slowly, the two systems drift apart over the centuries.
This difference is called the ayanamsha. At Magic Klara, I use the Lahiri, or Chitrapaksha, ayanamsha, one of the most widely used measures in traditional Jyotish. Today, the difference between the two systems is approximately 24 degrees, so the Sun, Moon or ascendant often shifts into the preceding sign.
A new sign does not erase your existing understanding. It offers another perspective. Alongside the sign, Jyotish considers the house, graha, nakshatra (lunar mansion), aspects and planetary periods. No single placement tells the whole story.
The tropical zodiac
Zero degrees of Aries is tied to the spring equinox. This system remains aligned with the seasons and forms the basis of most modern Western astrology.
The sidereal zodiac
The zodiac's zero point is tied to a stellar reference. A graha's position is therefore described against the sidereal backdrop used in Jyotish.
Ayanamsha
Ayanamsha is the angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zero points. Different traditions use slightly different calculations; what matters is that the chosen method is stated and applied consistently.
More than a sign
The sidereal Sun is just one layer. The Moon speaks to your inner experience, the ascendant to how you approach life, and the nakshatra adds a more precise psychological and symbolic tone.
Putting it into practice
What does it mean if your sign changes?
First, check your exact date, time and place of birth. The ascendant moves quickly, and an incorrect birth time can change the houses.
Do not compare only two Sun signs. Look at the whole chart, especially the ascendant, the Moon and its nakshatra.
Let the difference prompt another question: which description do you recognise in the way you act, and which in your inner experience?
For questions about timing, connect the sidereal birth chart with dashas (planetary periods) and transits. Only together do they reveal your personal context.
