Vimshottari · the rhythm of life's chapters
Dashas reveal which theme of life has come to the foreground
Your birth chart describes possibilities. Dashas help you understand when those possibilities mature. They are planetary periods, not certain predictions of events.

Clear understanding, without fear
Life does not always have the same focus.
Vimshottari dasha is the most widely used system of planetary periods in Jyotish, or Vedic astrology. The full cycle lasts 120 years. The initial maha dasha is determined by the position of the natal Moon within its nakshatra, or lunar mansion, so not everyone's life story begins at the same point.
A maha dasha is a major chapter. Within it run shorter subchapters called antar dashas. The main tone of the period therefore interweaves with the more immediate emphasis of the subperiod.
Outcomes are not determined by the general nature of the graha, or planetary influence, alone. Its house, sign, rulerships, connections, nakshatra and condition in your birth chart all matter. The same period can therefore bring very different themes to the surface for two people.

Nine maha dashas
The sequence is always the same. Your starting point, however, is personal: it is determined by your birth nakshatra.

Maha dasha
The main period sets the broader context of your life. It brings greater emphasis to the houses and themes represented by the ruling graha in your birth chart.
Antar dasha
The subperiod adds a second voice. It shows through which graha and area of life the main chapter is currently finding more direct expression.
The natal Moon
The sequence begins with the ruler of the natal Moon's nakshatra. At birth, usually only a proportional part of the first period remains.
The chart makes the difference
The Sun or Saturn does not tell the same story for everyone. Its placement in an individual chart reveals where the gifts, tasks, support and tensions lie.
Putting it into practice
How to work with dashas without fatalism
Check which maha dasha and antar dasha are running now. Then find their houses, signs and connections in your birth chart.
Compare the beginning of the period with actual events. Look for recurring themes rather than a single literal prediction.
Consider the dasha alongside transits. The dasha shows the active chapter, while a transit can trigger or highlight a specific moment.
Ask yourself how you can express the qualities of the ruling graha more maturely, rather than fearing its period.
