A chart has three layers: the graha (what is acting), the sign (how it acts), and the house (where it appears). The houses are the most tangible layer—they describe the settings of everyday life.

An Overview of the Twelve Houses

  1. First — body, appearance, initiative, first impressions. How you enter a room.
  2. Second — money, food, voice, family of origin, values.
  3. Third — courage, hands, siblings, everyday communication.
  4. Fourth — home, mother, roots, inner peace.
  5. Fifth — children, creativity, falling in love, merits from the past.
  6. Sixth — work, habits, health, debts, disciplined struggle.
  7. Seventh — partnership, contracts, the other person.
  8. Eighth — transformation, secrets, other people's money, esoteric knowledge, losses, and upheavals.
  9. Ninth — teachers, faith, distant journeys, meaning.
  10. Tenth — profession, reputation, your place in the world.
  11. Eleventh — community, income, fulfilled wishes.
  12. Twelfth — release, foreign lands, sleep, silence, spiritual practice.

How to Read a House in Practice

Look at which graha occupies the house, who rules the sign at the beginning of the house, and where that ruler is placed. These details form a sentence. For example, Saturn in the tenth house does not mean "there will be no success." It means success will come slowly, through perseverance, and that it will last.

The house is the stage. The graha is the actor. The sign is the costume.

To read about specific placements, open a graha and select a house—each combination has its own page.
