Vimshottari Dashas: Why Your Life Reads in Chapters
This 120-year cycle divides life into periods lasting from six to twenty years. When you know where you are in the cycle, chaos begins to take shape.

Vimshottari dasha is the most useful tool in Jyotish. The full cycle spans 120 years and follows a fixed sequence: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, and Mercury 17 years.
Where It Begins
The first period is determined by the ruler of the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth. Part of that period has already been "used up"—in exact proportion to how far the Moon has traveled through the nakshatra. This is why the first dasha has a different remaining length for each person.
Maha, Antar, Pratyantar
The major period (maha dasha) contains subperiods (antar dasha) and still smaller periods (pratyantar). The maha dasha sets the tone for the decade, while the antar dasha explains why everything shifted this year.
A new dasha rarely announces itself with a birthday. It announces itself through a move, a separation, an offer, a birth, or silence.
How to Read a Transition
When the maha dasha changes, the theme from which you draw your identity often changes too. In the transition from Venus to the Sun, many people shift their focus from relationships to career. From Saturn to Mercury, exhaustion often gives way to speaking, writing, and trade.
During the final months of the old dasha and the first few months of the new one, it is wise not to sign anything in haste—the picture is at its haziest then.
Calculation
You can get your maha dasha timeline for free in the tools section, with dates and the current period highlighted. For an interpretation of what a particular period means in your chart, explore a consultation.
