The Nine Grahas: Planets as Living Principles Within You
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. They are not to blame for your life—they are the voices in conversation within it.

The word graha means "that which holds." Not a "planet" in the astronomical sense, but a principle that holds something within you upright—or holds you by the throat until you turn toward it and look.
Seven Visible Bodies and Two Shadows
- Sun (Surya) — core, paternal lineage, dignity, visibility.
- Moon (Chandra) — mind, mother, sensitivity, the need for security.
- Mars (Mangala) — drive, boundaries, anger, the ability to begin.
- Mercury (Buddha) — speech, trade, intellect, curiosity.
- Jupiter (Guru) — meaning, teacher, grace, growth.
- Venus (Shukra) — love, beauty, pleasure, art, value.
- Saturn (Shani) — time, limits, maturity, patience, truth.
- Rahu — hunger, attraction to the unfamiliar, an insatiable drive forward.
- Ketu — release, a path already traveled, withdrawal, spiritual residue.
Supportive and Challenging Placements
No graha is "bad." Venus in a strong house brings taste and abundance; Venus under pressure brings dependence on validation. Saturn, when accepted, becomes your backbone; Saturn, when avoided, becomes exhaustion.
Rahu wants more. Ketu has already been there. Between them runs the axis of your life's lesson.
How to Read a Graha in Your Chart
First, we look at the sign and house, then the dispositor (the ruler of the sign), then the aspects, and finally the dasha—whether this graha is currently ruling your life period. The graha ruling the dasha always speaks the loudest.
I describe each graha through the houses on its own page: open the graha overview.
