Nakshatra: Your Lunar Mansion and Why It Reveals More Than Your Sign
The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into sections of 13°20′. The Moon's placement in one of them describes your temperament more precisely than any sign.

The zodiac has 360 degrees. Divide it into twelve, and you get the signs. Divide it into twenty-seven, and you get the nakshatras—each spans 13°20′ and has its own name, symbol, deity, and ruling graha, or planetary force.
Why 27?
The Moon completes its circuit in approximately 27.3 days. Each day, then, it "spends the night" in a different mansion. This is why the nakshatras form a lunar calendar, and why they describe the mind so precisely: its moods, pace, and ways of forming attachments.
Pada: Four Times the Detail
Each nakshatra is divided into four padas, or quarters, of 3°20′ each. The pada shows where the nakshatra's energy flows most strongly—into the body, work, relationships, or meaning. Two people with the same nakshatra but different padas often live very different stories.
What We Can Read from a Nakshatra
- Temperament and responses to stress.
- The ruler of the first dasha, setting the tone for the early years of life.
- Suitable timing for important beginnings (muhurta).
- Compatibility between partners.
The sign describes the climate. The nakshatra describes today's weather.
Calculation
To calculate your nakshatra, you need the Moon's sidereal longitude at the moment of birth. This requires an accurate conversion of local time to UTC and the Lahiri ayanamsha. The free calculator handles all of this—you receive your result in seconds, together with your pada and ruling graha.
You can find descriptions of all twenty-seven in the nakshatra overview.
